Shoot the Weather, Not Through It

Rain and snow are subjects. Stop trying to shutter them out of existence.

The instinct in bad weather is to raise shutter speed until precipitation freezes into invisible dots. Go the other way. A quarter to a thirtieth of a second turns snow into streaks and gives the frame direction and speed.

You will lose most of the sequence to motion blur in the subject. Shoot far more frames than feels reasonable and accept a two percent keeper rate — the two percent is unmatched by anything you would get at a two-thousandth.
