Gaur

A bull can exceed a tonne and stand near two metres at a shoulder ridge built from extended vertebrae — the heaviest wild cattle alive. The bulk is supported by browsing and grazing across large home ranges, which is exactly the requirement that modern land use fails to meet.

Gaur need continuous forest interleaved with open grazing, and they need it connected. Isolate a herd in a small reserve and it faces inbreeding, cattle-borne disease such as rinderpest and foot-and-mouth historically, and conflict wherever the forest edge meets a field. India holds the great majority of the world's remaining animals, largely in the Western Ghats and the central Indian landscapes, and the work there is corridor work.
