Ears built as radiators, not just receivers.
Those ears — up to fifteen centimetres on a fox weighing under a kilogram and a half — are dense with blood vessels and dump heat directly to the air. They also detect prey moving beneath the sand.
Fennecs can live without free-standing water indefinitely, extracting what they need from food and from kidneys tuned to concentrate urine severely. Their footpads are furred against sand that would burn other paws.
