The best-insulated mammal measured.
Everything is minimised for heat: short muzzle, short legs, small rounded ears, fur on the pads of the feet. The winter coat is the densest of any Arctic mammal and the animal changes colour twice a year.
In winter it will follow polar bears across the sea ice for days, living on what the bears leave. It is scavenging as a full-time occupation, done at scale across hundreds of kilometres.
