Male humpbacks in a given ocean basin sing the same song, and that song evolves through the season — a revision that propagates west to east across the South Pacific in a documented cultural wave. It is one of the clearest cases of non-human cultural transmission at scale.
Commercial whaling reduced some populations by over ninety-five percent. Protection has brought many back to near-historic numbers. It took sixty years and it worked.
