Photograph the water and the birds, not the architecture — everyone has the architecture.
The lagoon is the subject. It is one of the most important wetlands in the Mediterranean, holding tens of thousands of wintering waterbirds within sight of St Mark's. Go out at dawn in a small boat and you get herons and the campanile in the same frame.
In the city itself, November fog does the work: it removes tourists, removes the far bank, and reduces Venice to shapes on water — which is what it looked like for most of its history anyway.
The wild neighbour
Greater Flamingo
Phoenicopterus roseus
Flamingos have colonised the lagoon's southern shallows since the 1990s.
