A family unit that the last two centuries mistook for a monster.
A wolf pack is not a hierarchy of strangers competing for rank. It is, almost always, a breeding pair and their offspring of several years — a family. The 'alpha' framing came from studying unrelated captive animals and has been retracted by the researcher who popularised it.
Wolf presence changes how prey use a landscape, which changes what grows there. It is the clearest available demonstration that removing a predator is never a single-species decision.
